Our students were recognized for shadows and internships last night at the school board meeting and the staff members (Diane Donald and Blair Jensen) who helped them complete the process. All junior students shadowing and Interning spent most of first semester preparing for work in the medical field to qualify for these experiences. In addition to learning about dress code and professionalism, preparing for and participating in a “Mock interview” and gaining an understanding of the rules and regulations governing medical facilities, they had to complete HIPPA training and acquire knowledge about the laws related to abuse reporting. These students also had to provide TB clearance, vaccination records, and attend orientation before they ever stepped foot on a medical facility.

Kaiser interns had to commit to 60 hours and all of those hours are to be completed during holiday breaks. One of the students said the experience was “life changing” as she was able to rotate around the various departments including orthopedics, surgery, sonography, x-ray, pharmacy, oncology, and many more. She said she found her passion in oncology. Her mother said her daughter came home excited, every day filled with hospital stories, one after another, of Kaiser experiences.

Our RUHS students have to commit to 100 volunteer hours to be eligible to shadow with our Family Medicine Residency physician, Dr. Tsang. This is a very complicated process starting with filling out a thick application packet, scheduling a background check, fingerprinting, and “live scan” in addition to providing vaccination records, TB clearance, and attending a lengthy orientation.

More than 50 students have already participated in their shadows and internships.
